Trenton's Annual 24th of July Celebration

Well, to those who missed our famous celebration, here are some tid-bits of the day:
*The Joyful Noise Band, consisting of an electric guitar, a viola, a flute, a drummer, a recorder, and a tambourine--along with the musicians who played them--made music on a float in the parade.
*Isaac, Brigham, and Lisa attempted walking a line with the sheriff's special glasses that imitate the feeling of being drunk; zipped down the zip line, which was attached to a scaffolding on one end and a tractor on the other end (a person would catch them before they reached the tractor;) and played other carnival games, like fish pond, bean bag toss, and making bracelets.
*David and Amber played on the 4th place team for 3-0n-3 sand volleyball tournament.
*Isaac and Amber dove into the firemen's foam on the lawn--they lay down foam 20 feet in diameter and 2 feet deep, and a flock of kids play in it. Most adults end up getting thrown in, but I used my camera as my excuse/shield to ward off potential attackers... it worked--this time.
*Rachel, Lisa, and cousins played on the new waterslide--it came a couple weeks ago to replace the old broken one. (It only took them a year to send it!)
*Fireworks on the sod farm. Trenton Town Fire Department hosts a dinner every year on the sod farm, which belongs to the Fire Chief, to raise funds for next year's fire works show. Following the dinner, the kids play on the grass with balls, frisbees, and glow sticks, while the adults visit, then everyone oohs and aahs as the fireworks blast off from the opposite end of the farm. The designated parking area was full this year for the first time ever! I think this is becoming more popular--it is the 5th year the firemen have done this. It is different than any other fire works show I have experienced... because it is in such a remote location, the traffic getting out is nothing, and we know almost everyone there! Welcome to small town, USA!!!

Happy Independence Day!

We are celebrating our Independence here on the Ranch--independence from parades, crowds, traffic, and the like. Luckily, we can still enjoy liberty in America, and have the right to own land and raise plants and animals according to our own desires. I was even thinking last night as Brigham plugged in Elvis Presley--loud-- how nice it is to NOT have close neighbors who would mind our loud music while we were having a private dance with glow sticks. (Our nearest neighbors are 1/2 mile away... and would come in a heartbeat if they knew we were in trouble, but are far enough away that we can yell pretty loud and not bother them.)

Oh how we love it in Trenton! Here is a run down of our crowd-free Fourth of July: First, sleep in after a late night of working the concession stand at Utah State University's Fourth of July Program and Fireworks. Feeding the animals is always before our breakfast--and they were hungry. Then Norwegian Pancakes for breakfast--made by David and Brigham--with fresh raspberries picked last week at Grandma's. Following a scrub of the back deck, a sewing by hand repair job on the blow up waterslide, and some weeding, we played a bit of badminton and volleyball, followed by a round of a card game called Guillotine indoors. Then we took Pennie and Kalypso for a stroll down to the ponds. (In actuality, they took me for a stroll because Kalypso likes to run and doesn't fit in a halter yet--and Pennie was anxious to keep up!) While we were there, we noticed Grandpa's canoe, so we called for the life jackets and took a tour of the pond and took pictures of a little duck family and some pretty yellow birds. When that was over, David drove the canoe to "the big pond" and we took turns testing out those waters. In the mean time, back at the ranch, the slide was blown up and the little ones were playing "cops and robbers" with Dad--he was the cop and would tickle them upon capture. Aaah. Cold water feels so good on a hot day.

After the water party, Rachel and I ran to Lee's (our grocery store 15 minutes away) for candy because we opted out of the parades--and that is all the children thought they missed. =) Then it was time for dinner--hamburgers on the grill and rootbeer floats. After clean up and baths, we pulled out the sparklers and glow sticks (thanks to Lee's) and danced to Elvis--until 10:30. It is hard to describe how funny it looks for Isaac, who is full of energy, to have 10 glow sticks looped around his body while running around the yard. I should have taken pictures! I guess I was too tired and laughing to hard to even think of it.

Well, that was our Independence Party... we hope yours was grand as well. Blessings to you and your families.
