Our Faithful Kitty

The first month we moved to the country, our neighbors told us, "You need to get a cat. In the country, you either have cats or you have mice." And since we are not fans of mice, we got two kittens from a neighbor, named them "Gus" and "George," and learned how to care for them.

Since that time, we have seen many cats come and go. Many strays have "adopted" us, especially in the winter when food is scarce. They don't always last long in the country... there are predators... and roads... The experiences we have had with our cats have inspired many conversations about birth and death. Small children understand quickly how fragile life is through their experiences with animals.
I love this picture of Isaac with a tiny kitten. He was four at the time and couldn't get enough of the kitties. He has learned gentleness through his experience with kittens. And because of the examples of some kitties, he learned NOT to run into the street. Thank you, kitties!

This is our house cat, "Colors."
She joined our family in 2001 as a kitten, so she is over 10 years old. She started as an outdoor cat. Through the years, she has proven a faithful and gentle kitty, so in the summer of 2009, we invited her inside. She quickly learned the indoor routine, and curled up to anyone who would let her. Isaac invites her to sleep with him each night, and she usually accepts.

We can tell that Colors is smart. She has the countenance of an old, wise one. And though she moves slower than she used to, she can still catch a mouse, a ping pong ball, or anything else that catches her eye. She is super gentle with us. We have wondered if she has a sixth sense because whenever someone in our family is sick or hurt, she comes to console the invalid. This is a picture of Rachel when she had a fever. As I finished reading to Rachel and tucking her in bed that night, Colors came to take her post as Rachel's guardian for the night. When I checked on Rachel later that night, Colors was still there keeping her vigilant watch.

We love our pussy cat. She can cheer us up, console us, and make us laugh. What a faithful friend.
